Depressed, she returns to the lake house and finds Alex’s letter. They regularly trade letters, using the mailbox’s red flag to determine when the other has received their message. Eventually, they learn that they are living two years apart, but can communicate through the mailbox almost instantly. Kate asks Alex to find a copy of Jane Austen's Persuasion that she left at a train station, which he does, and Alex takes Kate on a tour of his favorite architecture in Chicago. Both eventually meet at a birthday party Kate’s then boyfriend, an attorney named Morgan, throws for her. Despite sharing a kiss, Alex does not tell Kate about the letters.

In 2006, physician Kate Forster leaves a lake house she has been renting near Chicago and starts a job at a downtown hospital. She leaves a note in the mailbox asking the next tenant to forward her mail and explaining that the painted-on pawprints on the front walkway were there when she moved in as was the box in the attic. The bar scene in the Loop where Kate is seen sitting on the barstool, speaking with the woman at the wooden bar, is the real "Millers Pub" located at 134 S Wabash Ave, Chicago, IL 60603. As you may imagine, it's not cheap to own property in a place so dreamy and popular as Big Bear Lake, but your investment (the median listing price is $643,468) will pay off, as this is a region that draws vacationers from Phoenix and Las Vegas throughout the year. Due to its relative proximity to Knoxville, the region is a popular vacation home destination (it's the second-largest market for a lake property in the state), but if you house hunt in places such as LaFollette or New Tazewell, you may find a home for under $500,000. And with a cap rate of 4.4%, investors are looking at about $27,000 in potential income.

Not wanting him to wait until it is published, she leaves it for him in the mailbox, hoping it will comfort him. The gesture convinces Alex and Kate that they should try to meet. Alex makes a reservation at a restaurant two years in advance for him, but the next day for Kate. Heartbroken, Kate ends their relationship and stops visiting the lake house to settle for a future with Morgan. Alex places their letters in a box in the house’s attic, like what Kate described in her first letter, and moves in with his brother Henry, also an architect. He tries to move on with his life, but still thinks about Kate.

Sandra Bullock is an enormously likable actor in the right role, and so is Keanu Reeves, although here they're both required to be marginally depressed because of events in their current (but not simultaneous) lives. Many of his problems circle around his father, Louis Wyler (Christopher Plummer), a famous Chicago architect. The old man is an egocentric genius who designed the Lake House, which his son dislikes because, like Louis himself, it lives in isolation; there aren't even any stairs to get down to the water.

The two people come to love each other, and this process involves the movie's second impossibility. Alex’s narcissistic father, respected architect Simon Wyler, is hospitalized and dies. Kate finds a book of photos of Simon’s work which hasn't been published in Alex’s time that includes a photo of Simon and Alex as a little boy at the lake house.

Notoriously scenic, the northern part of the Ozarks is home to epic fall foliage, beautiful small towns, and an endless list of recreational opportunities. According to Evolve data, properties are booked for more than six months out of the year, so owners can expect to add $28,305 to their yearly income. Of course, if you're hoping to make more, invest in a house with direct water access, but also be prepared to pay more than the median listing price, which is $394,776 for the area. While Virginia is home to Lake Anna, which can make investors close to $80,000 in annual income, lakefront homes in the area have unicorn status, and if they do come along, they feature a hefty price tag. Instead, consider Smith Mountain Lake, which boasts a 500-mile shoreline (more than double that of Lake Anna), with waterfront houses in the $500,000 to $1 million range. While that likely still sounds like a lot, you're looking at more than $33,000 of yearly income.

It's time to try good French toasts, waffles and chocolate cakes. Some clients recommend delicious draft beer, wine or craft beer at Lake House Bar and Grill. They do arrange one date, which involves them in some kind of time-loop misunderstanding, I think. I mean, I understand the event she refers to, but not whether it is a necessary event or can be prevented. Located on the southern shore of Lake Winnipesaukee, Gilford is the quintessential New England lake town, offering picture-perfect vistas, hiking and biking trails, boating, and a vibrant music scene at Bank of New Hampshire Pavilion, a 9,000-seat concert venue.

Waterfront Homes for Sale in Los Angeles

At the lake house, Kate is distraught with grief that she failed to save Alex and collapses to her knees at the mailbox. Dubbed the "jewel of the San Bernardino National Forest," Big Bear Lake is a four-season lake destination that treats visitors to gorgeous views, rugged nature, excellent ski facilities, hiking trails, historic sites, and much more. The Brainerd Lakes area sits in the heart of Minnesota and is home to some of the state's most scenic lakes (when your nickname is the "Land of 10,000 Lakes," that says something about the region). Water sports and fishing are favorite pastimes here, but with seven championship golf courses, so is golfing. Drawing visitors from three states (California, Arizona, and Nevada), Lake Havasu City is a four-season destination set against the dramatic backdrop of the Mojave Desert.

But Evolve experts recommend hiring an experienced real estate agent familiar with the HOA rules and regulations in this area. Regardless of which side of the lake versus ocean debate you fall on, you can't argue with the fact that the former provides a year-round reprieve from our busy lives, along with an endless supply of water sports, idyllic views, and cool breezes. And with approximately 480,000 lakes dotting the continental U.S., chances are there's a natural or man-made option a quick drive from your home. Evolve's data shows that median home values here are a little less than $345,000, with a cap rate of 4.3%. The company's experts recommend searching for a property in Gravois Mills, Osage Beach, and Lake Ozark to maximize your rental income.

The abundance of recreational activities available in the dozens of small towns here is excellent news for potential investors. Evolve experts note the average cap rate for lake houses in the region is around 5%, with median rental revenue slightly over $27,000. According to the company, lakefront cabins and homes with decks, fire pits, and grills perform better than any other rental property type.

Add to that Virginia's low property taxes and the region's natural draw with vacationers, and investing in the Smith Mountain Lake area makes plenty of sense. Branson is a magnet for vacationers of all ages, with many family-friendly activities in the area, including theme parks, live entertainment, and hundreds of miles of scenic shoreline, courtesy of Table Rock Lake. With a relatively low median home value — just over $232,000 — the destination is an excellent option for first-time investors seeking an affordable property with good rental potential — almost $20,000 a year, according to Evolve. "When determining the best places to buy a lake house, we look at destinations that have advantages for both potential investors and future guests," Louis Olds, director of real estate at Evolve, told Travel + Leisure. While having lunch in Daley Plaza on Valentine’s Day, 2006, Kate witnesses a man get hit by a car and tries but fails to save him.

Families flock to the towns around Silver Lake and Island Lake to profit from their calm waters and tranquil surroundings. Evolve estimates that a home in the area will bring in, on average, $33,500 a year, with an initial investment of about $425,000, which is the median listing home price. So, no wonder lakefront properties are an increasingly popular real estate investment. That's why vacation rental company Evolve put together a list of the best places to buy a lake house in 2023. In addition to houses in Los Angeles, there were also 1577 condos, 323 townhouses, and 1153 multi-family units for sale in Los Angeles last month.

Cruise Packing List Ultimate 2023 Checklist With Printable PDF Download

what to pack for a cruise checklist

You might also want a small bottle of perfume or cologne, too. In the case of emergency, you can always restock most of these items from the onboard shops or from a drugstore in port. While your stateroom will come stocked with premium bath amenities, you might want to bring travel-sized bottles of your preferred products, too. A wristwatch is key, especially when cruising between time zones (so you won’t stress about missing the ship while out on an excursion), while an umbrella or poncho can help save a rainy day.

Smart Casual Evenings

Check the weather, and stick to a cruise packing list with a good selection of shorts, jeans/khakis, sundresses/skirts, T-shirts (both long- and short-sleeved) and tank tops. Cruise Hive was established back in 2008 and among the earliest blogs in the industry. Since the start, it's been our aim to provide the latest cruise news covering all the major cruise lines. We make sure cruisers are fully prepared for their cruise vacation with tips on ships and ports.Millions of travelers rely on Cruise Hive in the United States, Europe, Australia, and around the world.

Daytime clothes and accessories

This app is designed to help you budget and track your onboard spending and offers a straightforward way to monitor your outgoings with an easy to use expense tracker. You can create custom categories, enter costs along with pictures of receipts, and have a customized budget with helpful graphs to keep track of how you’re doing. Other items such as strollers, sports equipment, wheelchairs, musical instruments, and other medical items can also be checked, but you should speak to the airline first. Most airlines will allow for 1 checked item per passenger for international flights for free but may charge for checked items on domestic flights. Your suitcase should not have a total dimension of more than 62 inches. That’s the total measurement of the length, height, and width.

Use an Air Tag (or other luggage tracking device)

You can also bring seabands, which are great for the cruise ship as well as boat excursions. However, it’s a good idea to have small bills to tip the luggage porters as you drop off your luggage on embarkation day, or if they assist you for disembarkation. You may also want to tip for room service delivery, tour guides in a cruise port and have cash to make small purchases in a shore side market.

You'll also want to consider what you'll need aboard your cruise aside from clothing. Be sure to bring along key travel documents, like copies of flight and hotel bookings. The cruise line will send you designated luggage tags, too; add those onto your luggage before embarking the ship. Hair can sometimes require extra taming when coming in from a day at the beach or a windy sea day up on deck. Be prepared with all the hairstyling products, accessories, and tools you need, as well as a brush/comb, too. Keep in mind that ships are equipped with gyms and outdoor tracks, fitness classes abound, and many ports welcome runners, kayakers, bikers, and other active types.

For most people, a cruise is a long-awaited vacation on the high seas. There's just something about being out on the ocean and waking up to a different destination every day that creates such a perfect dichotomy of traveling by land and sea. In this post we went over what to pack for a cruise, as well as over 60 useful cruise packing tips and hacks for new and experienced cruisers.

Make sure you have enough plug-ins and outlets in your stateroom by packing a non-surge power strip. When shopping, look for one with a few regular outlets and USB ports. For easy transitions from water to land, purchase products made from durable, quick-drying materials.

Once the hamper is full, I refold the clothes and put them in my suitcase. Because most of the walls in cabins are magnetic, many cruise lines allow travelers to use magnetic hooks. Use them to hang hats and lanyards, or decorations if you’re celebrating a special occasion. To keep other items like wallets, cell phones, sunglasses and water bottles organized and always at the ready, bring along an over-door shoe organizer with clear pockets. A few protective items keep cruisers comfortable on board the ship and on land.

There is a whole list of items that can’t be brought onboard, so it's best to know about this ahead of time and not waste space or risk losing them. It is always a good idea to keep valuables such as a phone and wallet safe when venturing out in ports. Cross-body bags with secure locks or a money belt are good options. It never hurts to stick an umbrella or rain ponchos in your bag in case any tropical showers pop up.

Passports are not technically required if you are a U.S. citizen embarking on a “closed-loop” cruise route. This means that you depart from and return to the same U.S. port, after visiting at least 1 foreign port of call. If you are leaving from and returning to separate ports, you will need your passport. A digital camera — You will want to capture epic images of life at sea, as well as the many destinations you will visit along the way.

Another solid — and slightly cheaper — option are Sorel’s Out N About III Waterproof Sneakers. They’re super stylish and come in four neutral colors, offering ankle support, removable insoles, and sleek leather trims to make them more stylish and comfortable than your average athletic kicks. In addition to being waterproof, which is useful if you’re caught out in one of Florida’s famous sun showers, these shoes are also certified for sustainability. I hope this post has been helpful to give you a good idea to know what to pack for your cruise vacation. These are some ways to organize and add more storage to your cruise ship cabin.

If you’re using different electronics, you shouldn’t forget to carry a power strip. When packing, it’s always a good idea to use multiple packing folders to make sure that your outfits are well organized and easy to access when you set sail. Also, don’t overlook essentials such as batteries for your camera, earplugs, and a motion sickness band. It’s always advisable that you start parking a few days before your cruise as you’re less likely to forget vital essentials. It’s however essential to check on your cruise lines dress code, then select the outfits that make you feel comfortable and attractive.

You won’t need cash to pay cruise ship tips or gratuities, as this can be charged to your credit card during your cruise. For your convenience, you can even prepay gratuities before your cruise if you like. These 2 laundry items are very useful when traveling, but especially on a cruise ship when you don’t have easy access to laundry facilities. You’ll be able to fill your coffee mug at the cruise ship buffet or cafe, and enjoy a big cup at any time of day. The water on board the ship is filtered and safe to drink, so bring refillable water bottles to sip from while on the ship by the pool and especially in port when going to the beach.

This long, loungy open-front cardigan not only looks incredibly luxe, but it's also machine washable — unlike cashmere or other high-end fabric blends — and comes in five neutral shades. There are all sorts of remedies for seasickness, from weighted wristbands to acupuncture patches, and even noshing on green apples and ginger candies. And, when you're off your cruise ship, boat rides to go snorkeling or fishing trips in Alaska can easily get a bit choppy.

High humidity levels may be uncomfortable to some, but they’re far more manageable than those in the spring and summer. There's a certain kitsch factor at El Cielo Lounge Bar, from the neon cursive signs encouraging bad decisions to the electric blue cocktails and clouds of hookah smoke. Cozumel may be small, but it knows how to party into the wee hours, and you'll often find people pushing their bedtimes at El Cielo. Mexican silver is a great trinket to bring home, and on Cozumel, Sergio's has the best selection of jewelry. Essentially a small city is built here to cater to cruise passengers before they head out to the city and before they return back to the ship. It has a nice white sandy beach but what is notable about this beach are the two huge rock formations that break the surf and create a nice swimming area on the beach. The well-lighted shallow waters are perfect for swimming and snorkeling. As if Cozumel doesn't have enough pristine beachfront, many day trippers to the island like to pop over to the nearby uninhabited Isla Pasion. Lots of cruise lines also offer packages for excursions to Isla Pasion, so it's easy to squeeze in a visit.

The Two Ports Are SeparateIf you arrive at the International Pier or Puerta Maya Pier, you’ll see that they are right next to each other. Even so, they are separated and only available to passengers on ships in that port. To be honest, they offer similar amenities so if you visit one, you’ll get much of the same experience as visiting the other. Hotels With Day PassesWant to just enjoy the amenities of resorts on Cozumel — such as a private pool, a beach only to hotel guests, showers, meals, and drinks? These packages are combinable with a post-cruise/3-night package in Panama City (that includes a visit to Panama Canal's Gatun Lake/Miraflores locks and Chagres NP) to a 15-night vacation package. Joining the AmaDouro and AmaVida ships, the AmaSintra will sail along the Douro River. The itineraries include "Enticing Douro," starting from Porto, Portugal, and "Flavors of Portugal & Spain," which encompasses a voyage from Porto to Vega de Terron, Spain. In May 2017 started the construction of Europe's largest river cruise ship - AmaMagna. AmaWaterways offers 33 different itineraries in Europe on the Danube, Rhine, Rhone, Seine, Garonne and Dordogne, Douro, Main and Moselle rivers, as well as the waterways of Belgium and Holland. Viking's entertainment is similar to most river cruise lineups and features a musician or DJ as well as local performers with a folkloric, classical or contemporary style.

Adventures by Disney expands family travel with Holland and Belgium river cruises

Unique in the river cruise industry, guests opting to add land packages are escorted throughout their journeys by AmaWaterways’ knowledgeable Cruise Managers. Both cruise lines take the same approach to dining, with a combination of buffet and off-the-menu ordering at breakfast and lunch, then a sit-down dinner at a set time each night. Seating on both lines is open, meaning passengers can sit wherever they'd like. Soda, beer and regional wines are included at meal times, and menus source heavily from local markets and reflect the areas through which the ships sail.

FRANCE

Our Africa itineraries pair a unique cruise on this waterway with luxurious land and safari programs that include the UNESCO-designated Victoria Falls, stays at authentic wildlife lodges, unforgettable safaris through national parks and more. Cruise the Mekong River along this fabled waterway through Vietnam and Cambodia, gliding past flourishing forests, lush green hills and colorful stilt houses. Our river cruise and land adventures also allow you to witness the majesty of breathtaking sites such as the Angkor Archaeological Complex, Ha Long Bay and even Bangkok’s Temple of the Emerald Buddha. With a second ship for the Nile, extended seasons on the Douro, Rhine and Danube rivers, and a new itinerary on the Saône River through the Burgundy region of France, there is much to discover in 2024 with AmaWaterways. 5-night "Majestic Capitals of the Danube" departs from Budapest, visits Bratislava and ends in Vienna, with optional land packages in Krakow Poland or Salzburg Austria. Both vessels offer travelers the chance to indulge in Latin-American cuisine, unique excursions and entertainment.

On Portugal's Douro River, AmaWaterways has two ships, AmaDouro and AmaVida. Ships from both lines also have complimentary bikes onboard for passengers to use while in port. On Avalon, Suite Ships also have a salon for hair services and manicures. AmaWaterways boats feature small (one-room) spas, where moderately priced massages are offered, and a small salon. Both Avalon and AmaWaterways have well-designed cabins, particularly on the upper decks. Both lines sail the Rhine, Main, Danube, Moselle, Seine and Rhone rivers in Europe, as well as the Mekong in Vietnam and Cambodia.

At just 150 feet in length, Zambezi Queen was designed in 2019 specifically for wildlife viewing and accommodates just 28 passengers and 22 crew. On the Mekong River in Southeast Asia, AmaDara is the cruise line's sole vessel. This ship, featuring French colonial decor and beautifully carved wood furniture, accommodates 124 passengers and 52 crew.

INTRODUCING AMAMAGNA

The ships in AmaWaterways and Viking's river cruise fleets range from intimate (28 guests) to grand (386 guests), with the size differences most notable on rivers such as the Nile, Mekong and Mississippi. Like anything else, when you’re trying to make a comparison of the various river cruise lines, you want to make certain that you’re comparing apples-to-apples. Some river cruise lines will pack north of 190 people on the same size ship that other cruise lines might have only 106! And, as you might imagine, the river cruise line with only 106 people is going to cost more than the river cruise line with over 190 people on board. Journey through thousands of years of storied history, where castles were built, and kings and queens were crowned. The quintessential experience for first-time river cruisers, the Danube River has inspired countless artists and musicians for centuries.

AmaWaterways Cruise Reviews

Both lines have several Captain's Dinners during the cruise that add extra courses and usually free hors d'oeuvres during that night's cocktail hour. In addition, Ama is a member of the French gastronomic society, Chaine des Rotisseurs; there's a French dinner with wines from that country served for everyone in the main dining room once per cruise. Avalon also has a tasting menu with wine pairings, held several times per cruise. The meal has 15 courses (they are small) and is held in the ship's main lounge.

Both lines have small dance floors in their lounges, although whether or not they'll be used depends on the passengers. AmaWaterways is a wonderful pick for passengers who want to be active or travel with children as well as those who want more amenities onboard. Viking is a good choice for passengers who desire adults-only vacations that include immersive port experiences. With either line, passengers will find plenty of room for lounging, whether outdoors on the top deck or inside in the ships' lounges. Both lines offer concierge services, books to borrow on topics like history or tourism, comfortable bars for drinks and dancing and top-deck walking tracks and giant chess boards. Ships on both lines feature elevators, and some Viking ships have sun deck herb gardens, which chefs use daily.

Viking offers a beverage package option, called the Silver Spirits package, which runs about $30 per person per day and allows passengers to drink unlimited premium wine, spirits and beer while onboard. AmaWaterways and Viking are similarly priced across all cabin categories, from the lowest on up to the suites, and both offer comparable inclusions. Your cruise fare on both will include at least one shore excursion in each port; wine, beer and soda at lunch and dinner; all onboard meals; Wi-Fi; and cultural enrichment. AmaWaterways suggests 100 euros per person per seven-night cruise (120 euros on AmaMagna), with an additional 25 euros per week-long sailing for the cruise manager.

Passengers are treated to a multicourse meal with unlimited premium wine, paired to the courses. Even at the lowest level, Viking's cabins include exceptional storage space, with lots of drawers and underbed space for storing suitcases. Cabins also feature great lighting, which employs dimmer switches and bedside controls. Bathrooms have heated floors, a surprising and wonderful detail, especially in the middle of the night. Africa’s Chobe River supports a diversity and concentration of wildlife unparalleled anywhere else on the continent.

For slightly larger accommodations, river cruisers should look to AmaMagna, as its double-width design allows for roomier accommodations. Its two top balcony categories offer a generous 474 and 710 square feet of space, similar to the square footage of suites on many ocean ships. Fixed window cabins on the lowest deck are 160 square feet, French balcony cabins are 155 to 170 square feet, twin balcony cabins (with both a French balcony and step-out veranda) are 210 to 235 square feet, and suites are 300 to 350 square feet. The company's two Douro River ships, AmaDouro and AmaVida, feature similarly sized cabins and suites.

Six Ama ships -- AmaViola, AmaStella, AmaKristina, AmaLea , AmaMora and AmaMagna -- also include several cabins that can accommodate three people (with a king-sized bed along with a chair that converts into a twin bed). These six ships also feature a number of connecting cabins, designed with families in mind. Viking and Ama both include enrichment programs during their sailings, and the offerings are comparable. They're designed to provide more insight into the ports and destinations the ships visit. The lines might bring onboard local singers, dancers and musicians during visits to Vienna, for example, or teach passengers how to make local dishes. Talks, too, focus on history of the region, and might include scenic cruising lectures, where the speaker points out highlights as the boat sails.

Sports Activities and SportSquare Carnival Cruise Line

carnival cruise activities

The best spot to get a dose of sun (or an appropriate amount of shade) is the Serenity Deck a beautifully relaxing spot for adults only (the minimum age to relax here is 21). Located on the very top deck -- Deck the space is gorgeously appointed, with sun beds, lounge chairs, hammocks and clamshells. You'll find faux palm trees and bright yellow umbrellas, along with some of the best views from the ship. It's away from the action of the Beach Pool area, so it really is quiet and far less busy.

The second quarter involves pool deck games where passengers have to dress up in football gear to complete team races. There's also a hot tub at Loft 19 on Deck 19, which charges a fee for access. Go one deck farther, and you can choose between the Havana Bar, which serves Latin-themed cocktails, and the Heroes Tribute Lounge, which has a special menu of drinks dedicated to military members. Back inside, Deck 6's Piano Bar is where passengers can order a tipple while an onboard pianist tickles the ivories. Make your way up a deck, and you'll find the Limelight Lounge, which serves as a secondary performance space and trivia outpost.

Tweens and Teens on Carnival Horizon

After 300 plus cruises, I can attest that the wifi on board Carnival Celebration is by far the best I’ve ever experienced on any ship and that even includes Princess’ Medallion Class. I also found that the single device rule was actually quite easy to negotiate, with a simple click or two to disable one device and activate another. With two to nine-day cruises from Tampa to the Caribbean and the Bahamas, Carnival Paradise literally takes cruisers to paradise islands. The ship brims with fun amenities like the WaterWorks splash zone and the relaxing Cloud 9 Spa.

Junior Suite (Obstructed View)

Smoking (including electronic cigarettes) is allowed but only in designated outdoor areas on Deck 8 mid-ship on the starboard side. Smoking is also allowed on the starboard side of the casino, but it's for cigarettes only. All types of smoking are forbidden in cabins and on cabin balconies.

Carnival Jubilee restaurants and bars

On Carnival Magic, Deluxe Ocean View staterooms are a great choice for families who want to let the sun shine in as they sail. Rooms in this category feature great views, a full bathroom — plus a separate washroom — and while stateroom configurations vary, certain Deluxe Ocean View rooms have space to sleep up to five cruisers. Here's your chance to dip a toe into onboard entertainment, activities, bars and more… so that when you cruise, you're ready to dive headfirst into the fun. During the evenings, the official dress code is pretty laid-back. Most nights are designated "cruise casual," which means just that — khakis or jeans, polo shirts, sundresses and the like. Super casual items such as cutoff jeans, men's sleeveless shirts, T-shirts and gym shorts are supposedly not permitted, but I saw plenty of them in the dining rooms during dinnertime on Carnival Jubilee.

Cloud 9 Spa Ocean View (Walkway View)

However, the service was generally excellent, with an exceedingly friendly crew. When Carnival Cruise Line's Carnival Jubilee debuted in December 2023, it became the third ship in the line's Excel Class, closely mimicking sister ships Mardi Gras and Carnival Celebration. Although there are more similarities than differences among the three, Carnival has still found a way to make Carnival Jubilee innovative and fun by tweaking a few of the offerings. The fitness center carries a range of cardiovascular equipment, such as treadmills, ellipticals, rowing machines and stationary bikes.

The colorful, creative space features an ocean motif, and programming focuses on things like active play, arts and crafts, music, and science and discovery -- many of which are inspired by the ocean. Furniture in Camp Ocean is properly kid-sized, and the room features beanbags, tumble mats and brightly colored blankets. The space also includes televisions for movies and video games, plenty of toys, slides and games. There's also a creative corner, with tables and hand-washing stations, for arts and crafts.

Kids Clubs on Carnival Celebration: Camp Ocean

If you’re into eating healthy and staying fit, you’ll have no problem keeping up your healthy lifestyle on the ship. Get in a good workout at the fitness center, where you’ll also have the opportunity to join in on an assortment of fun and energetic fitness classes. There are also a number of other bars that can be found onboard, including a tequila bar, a pour your own beer station, piano bar, karaoke bar and specialty cocktail bars.

FUN ON DECK

Lunches aren't provided on sea days, but on shore days, kids can enjoy lunch in the Lido Marketplace, while parents are ashore. Horizon's main dining rooms offer kids menus as part of a dinner-time coloring book, with fun distraction features like word finds and mazes. The spa also features a good-sized Thermal Suite, featuring steam rooms (including aroma and hammam), dry heat chambers, experience showers and a large whirlpool. The only thing that's missing is a thalassotherapy pool, which would be a nice touch in the space. There also are nine heated ceramic lounge chairs, which were well-used on our cruise.

Although it's often loud, busy and difficult to navigate, especially on sea days, it's a prime place to sit and people-watch. I found myself gravitating there repeatedly to enjoy coffee or a snack from the nearby JavaBlue Cafe while watching the cast from that night's show rehearse at Center Stage — something you can't usually do on other ships. Parents must sign in and out kids younger than 9 years old, but they can elect to give kids 9 and older the ability to sign themselves out. Camp Ocean provides hosted kids-only dinners each night (except the first night) in the Lido Marketplace. Menus are kid-friendly, with options like pizza, fish sticks and hamburgers.

Although the first half felt a bit shaky and slightly boring to me, the second half redeemed it all, featuring a parade of dancers and aerialists dressed in flamboyant costumes synonymous with Rio de Janeiro's Carnival. If you're interested in spending time outdoors working on your tan by the pool, you can do so at one of five onboard pools. I also wasn't impressed with how long it took a bartender to ask for my order, especially since it wasn't particularly crowded. My two most disappointing extra-fee food encounters on Carnival Jubilee were Seafood Shack (Deck 16, in the Lido zone, near the pool) and room service. The space is simply packed with tables — so much so that there were only about two inches between my table and the one next to me, even though I was dining alone. It then took nearly 10 minutes for a waiter to bring me water and another 10 before someone came to take my order.

Circle “C” and Club O2 are designed for young teens (12-14) and older teens (15-17), respectively. These clubs provide a great place to hang out without the parents. Teens can also enjoy Digital Play, Party Time and Active Play, all designed to foster group engagement. Younger kids can take part in Camp Ocean, which is a supervised program designed to enlighten and entertain young minds. The wild and wacky world of Dr. Seuss is also onboard, offering plenty of silly times for kids of all ages.
