As part of your tour, your guide will point out Mayan ruins and beautiful caverns that line the trails. You’ll get a chance to learn about the history of the island and the people who lived here thousands of years ago. Weather in Cozumel in April: Hot Days and Low Chances of Rain

It's an upscale experience chock-full of inclusions, from daily guided snorkeling expeditions to horseback riding, kayaking, and driving dune buggies. It's also a quick walk to the beach at the sibling resort, Fiesta Americana Cozumel. Whether you’re visiting for just a few hours, or planning to spend several nights, Cozumel has enough to fill an itinerary. We’ve rounded up some of our favorite tips on where to go, what to see, and where to eat while visiting Cozumel.

Best Galapagos Islands Cruise: Ships, Cost, & Tips

Temperatures don’t differ much from those you can expect in January, typically ranging from 70ºF to 82ºF. High humidity levels may be uncomfortable to some, but they’re far more manageable than those in the spring and summer. There's a certain kitsch factor at El Cielo Lounge Bar, from the neon cursive signs encouraging bad decisions to the electric blue cocktails and clouds of hookah smoke. Cozumel may be small, but it knows how to party into the wee hours, and you'll often find people pushing their bedtimes at El Cielo. Mexican silver is a great trinket to bring home, and on Cozumel, Sergio's has the best selection of jewelry. Plus, the centrally located shop is within walking distance of the cruise terminal downtown.

Night Western Caribbean & Perfect DayDetails

You won't find any other experience like La Casita de Indio on Cozumel. If you're someone who loves a local connection, this is the dining experience to try. "This local spot has a family cooking for you in their own home," said Rabinor.

Most restaurants have menus posted outside where you can see if it fits what you want to eat and your budget. But if you’re anywhere near the ports or water, you’ll find all sorts of options. Local SpotsIf you head out of the port or you aren’t fed on an excursion, there are a number of local spots where you can pop in an grab a bite to eat. Many of these restaurants near the port are waterfront, so you can sit, relax, and have a drink and meal with a fantastic view. If you’re not an adventurous eater, don’t worry; much of it is similar to what you’d find in the United States as many flavors have been adapted to please American tastes.

RAINFORESTS TO RUINS

But for those who want a truly authentic experience Cozumel does not disappoint. You can get a casual, relaxing dining experience at one of the many eateries along the beach or try something more upscale. If you’re going to see some Mayan ruins on the mainland you will end up on a ferry to the mainland. But if you want to pay for it yourself to check out Playa Del Carmen it will cost around $10. If you want to take a taxis in Cozumel it is easy and affordable.

This quirky furniture store is packed with some beautifully handcrafted wooden pieces. A Cozumel institution, the InterContinental Presidente Cozumel Resort Spa has a lengthy white-sand beach and five-star accommodations. One of the best benefits of the clear Caribbean waters off the Yucatan is world-class scuba diving. At Cozumel's Santa Rosa Wall, you can see large schools of grouper fish, while the Cancun Underwater Museum reveals a world of sub-surface art.

The workshop shows you how to mix a basic margarita and how to measure your ingredients and pour your alcohol. With a VIP package, you don’t need to worry about bringing anything. Instead, you can simply rest and relax the way that you deserve on your amazing Cozumel Mexico vacation. Either way, this is a once-in-a-lifetime adventure that you won’t be able to find anywhere else. Reach out and touch the backs of one of these silky sea creatures as they slide past you.

We hope this list will help have the best time during your visit to the island. With all these amazing activities available to you, it’s time to book a trip to Cozumel Mexico! Don’t miss out on these top things to do in Cozumel and make sure to plan your trip with plenty of time to enjoy all the activities on your list. On this unique tour, you’ll climb aboard a historic trolley that carries you to the town of Cozumel. During your ride, you’ll learn all about the rich religious history of the city and how the town came to be. You’ll be able to see incredible frescoes and beautiful statues carved into stone that rise above the blue waters of the Caribbean Sea.

Essentially a small city is built here to cater to cruise passengers before they head out to the city and before they return back to the ship. It has a nice white sandy beach but what is notable about this beach are the two huge rock formations that break the surf and create a nice swimming area on the beach. The well-lighted shallow waters are perfect for swimming and snorkeling. As if Cozumel doesn't have enough pristine beachfront, many day trippers to the island like to pop over to the nearby uninhabited Isla Pasion. Lots of cruise lines also offer packages for excursions to Isla Pasion, so it's easy to squeeze in a visit.

This means you’ll need to book in advance if you have very specific plans for your time on the island. There are still plenty of clouds in the sky some days, but only five days of rain on average in December. The temperature range this month is small, with daytime temperatures in the high 70s and evenings in the low 70s. Although November is considered low season, it is a great time to cruise to Cozumel, as there will be fewer crowds. This also means that some businesses may be closed or have reduced hours, so plan accordingly.

Although a direct hurricane hit is not likely, chances are heavy downpours will impact your plans. Indoor activities are the safest bet in August, including participating in tastings and cooking classes. You’ll be vying for a spot with many other cruisers and booking ahead of time is advisable. If you don’t feel like cooking yourself, you can also indulge in a Caribbean feast at any of the restaurants on Cozumel before moving on to your next plan. The weather in Cozumel in April is dry and sunny, with conditions that are typically similar to those in March. Temperatures could be a little bit higher than in previous weeks (with daytime highs of around 85ºF), and humidity levels may begin to increase ever so slightly.

The easiest way to reach Cozumel is to fly directly into its airport (CZM). The small Aeropuerto Internacional de Cozumel receives flights from American, Delta, Southwest, United, Volaris, Aeromexico, Air Canada, WestJet, and Sun Country Airlines. While The Explorean is adults-only, its sibling resort, Fiesta Americana Cozumel, welcomes families to its oceanfront location. Guests can expect a private boat dock with overwater beds, suites with balconies, and five restaurants. Cozumel, Mexico, has all the ingredients for a perfect beach vacation — with a twist. Or order one with a more exotic choice of protein – ceviche de pulpo features tender octopus.

This is where you’ll have the opportunity to see all the different types of wildlife up close and enjoy this beachy nature preserve. Your salsa instructor will walk you through the basic salsa dancing steps. He or she will show you how to dance solo or with a partner so that you can enjoy this fun Latino dance style.

The Two Ports Are SeparateIf you arrive at the International Pier or Puerta Maya Pier, you’ll see that they are right next to each other. Even so, they are separated and only available to passengers on ships in that port. To be honest, they offer similar amenities so if you visit one, you’ll get much of the same experience as visiting the other. Hotels With Day PassesWant to just enjoy the amenities of resorts on Cozumel — such as a private pool, a beach only to hotel guests, showers, meals, and drinks? A number of hotels and resorts on the island (including some right near the cruise ship) offer day passes. It’s a great deal if you simply want to have a leisurely day at the pool or beach without having to fight large crowds.

Dive into bright-blue waters, Mayan ruins and spicy specialities in Cozumel and Cancun. Mexico is known for its tequila and there are all sorts of stores that sell bottles to tourists. When you get back on the ship, the alcohol will be checked and held in the ship’s storage. It will be returned to you the last night of your cruise before debarking.

AmaWaterways River Cruises Cruise Reviews 2024 UPDATED: Ratings of River Cruises Cruise AmaWaterways Cruises

amaways river cruise

Viking currently has 69 river ships, with two more scheduled to launch in 2024 and 2025. Choose AmaWaterways if you enjoy biking and hiking, and really want to get active in every port. It's also a good choice for families as the vehicle for Adventures by Disney cruises. Choose Avalon if you want access to some of the top guides in a region, and enjoy having a bed that faces the river in a room with more space overall. On the top deck on some of its ships, AmaWaterways has heated swimming pools with swim-up bars that are surprisingly large for a river line.

AmaWaterways opens bookings for river cruises in 2025

These offerings are complemented by a daily selection of two starters, two mains (always with a vegetarian selection) and one dessert. In addition, guests can choose from a Classics menu with always-available favorites. Sit-down lunch menus in the Main Restaurant feature a selection of appetizers served family-style and main course options that include at least one local preparation, such as goulash in Budapest or wiener schnitzel in Vienna.

Day 9

These packages are combinable with a post-cruise/3-night package in Panama City (that includes a visit to Panama Canal's Gatun Lake/Miraflores locks and Chagres NP) to a 15-night vacation package. Joining the AmaDouro and AmaVida ships, the AmaSintra will sail along the Douro River. The itineraries include "Enticing Douro," starting from Porto, Portugal, and "Flavors of Portugal & Spain," which encompasses a voyage from Porto to Vega de Terron, Spain. In May 2017 started the construction of Europe's largest river cruise ship - AmaMagna. AmaWaterways offers 33 different itineraries in Europe on the Danube, Rhine, Rhone, Seine, Garonne and Dordogne, Douro, Main and Moselle rivers, as well as the waterways of Belgium and Holland. Viking's entertainment is similar to most river cruise lineups and features a musician or DJ as well as local performers with a folkloric, classical or contemporary style.

Adventures by Disney expands family travel with Holland and Belgium river cruises

amaways river cruise

Unique in the river cruise industry, guests opting to add land packages are escorted throughout their journeys by AmaWaterways’ knowledgeable Cruise Managers. Both cruise lines take the same approach to dining, with a combination of buffet and off-the-menu ordering at breakfast and lunch, then a sit-down dinner at a set time each night. Seating on both lines is open, meaning passengers can sit wherever they'd like. Soda, beer and regional wines are included at meal times, and menus source heavily from local markets and reflect the areas through which the ships sail.

FRANCE

Our Africa itineraries pair a unique cruise on this waterway with luxurious land and safari programs that include the UNESCO-designated Victoria Falls, stays at authentic wildlife lodges, unforgettable safaris through national parks and more. Cruise the Mekong River along this fabled waterway through Vietnam and Cambodia, gliding past flourishing forests, lush green hills and colorful stilt houses. Our river cruise and land adventures also allow you to witness the majesty of breathtaking sites such as the Angkor Archaeological Complex, Ha Long Bay and even Bangkok’s Temple of the Emerald Buddha. With a second ship for the Nile, extended seasons on the Douro, Rhine and Danube rivers, and a new itinerary on the Saône River through the Burgundy region of France, there is much to discover in 2024 with AmaWaterways. 5-night "Majestic Capitals of the Danube" departs from Budapest, visits Bratislava and ends in Vienna, with optional land packages in Krakow Poland or Salzburg Austria. Both vessels offer travelers the chance to indulge in Latin-American cuisine, unique excursions and entertainment.

On Portugal's Douro River, AmaWaterways has two ships, AmaDouro and AmaVida. Ships from both lines also have complimentary bikes onboard for passengers to use while in port. On Avalon, Suite Ships also have a salon for hair services and manicures. AmaWaterways boats feature small (one-room) spas, where moderately priced massages are offered, and a small salon. Both Avalon and AmaWaterways have well-designed cabins, particularly on the upper decks. Both lines sail the Rhine, Main, Danube, Moselle, Seine and Rhone rivers in Europe, as well as the Mekong in Vietnam and Cambodia.

At just 150 feet in length, Zambezi Queen was designed in 2019 specifically for wildlife viewing and accommodates just 28 passengers and 22 crew. On the Mekong River in Southeast Asia, AmaDara is the cruise line's sole vessel. This ship, featuring French colonial decor and beautifully carved wood furniture, accommodates 124 passengers and 52 crew.

INTRODUCING AMAMAGNA

The ships in AmaWaterways and Viking's river cruise fleets range from intimate (28 guests) to grand (386 guests), with the size differences most notable on rivers such as the Nile, Mekong and Mississippi. Like anything else, when you’re trying to make a comparison of the various river cruise lines, you want to make certain that you’re comparing apples-to-apples. Some river cruise lines will pack north of 190 people on the same size ship that other cruise lines might have only 106! And, as you might imagine, the river cruise line with only 106 people is going to cost more than the river cruise line with over 190 people on board. Journey through thousands of years of storied history, where castles were built, and kings and queens were crowned. The quintessential experience for first-time river cruisers, the Danube River has inspired countless artists and musicians for centuries.

AmaWaterways Cruise Reviews

Both lines have several Captain's Dinners during the cruise that add extra courses and usually free hors d'oeuvres during that night's cocktail hour. In addition, Ama is a member of the French gastronomic society, Chaine des Rotisseurs; there's a French dinner with wines from that country served for everyone in the main dining room once per cruise. Avalon also has a tasting menu with wine pairings, held several times per cruise. The meal has 15 courses (they are small) and is held in the ship's main lounge.

amaways river cruise

Both lines have small dance floors in their lounges, although whether or not they'll be used depends on the passengers. AmaWaterways is a wonderful pick for passengers who want to be active or travel with children as well as those who want more amenities onboard. Viking is a good choice for passengers who desire adults-only vacations that include immersive port experiences. With either line, passengers will find plenty of room for lounging, whether outdoors on the top deck or inside in the ships' lounges. Both lines offer concierge services, books to borrow on topics like history or tourism, comfortable bars for drinks and dancing and top-deck walking tracks and giant chess boards. Ships on both lines feature elevators, and some Viking ships have sun deck herb gardens, which chefs use daily.

Viking offers a beverage package option, called the Silver Spirits package, which runs about $30 per person per day and allows passengers to drink unlimited premium wine, spirits and beer while onboard. AmaWaterways and Viking are similarly priced across all cabin categories, from the lowest on up to the suites, and both offer comparable inclusions. Your cruise fare on both will include at least one shore excursion in each port; wine, beer and soda at lunch and dinner; all onboard meals; Wi-Fi; and cultural enrichment. AmaWaterways suggests 100 euros per person per seven-night cruise (120 euros on AmaMagna), with an additional 25 euros per week-long sailing for the cruise manager.

Passengers are treated to a multicourse meal with unlimited premium wine, paired to the courses. Even at the lowest level, Viking's cabins include exceptional storage space, with lots of drawers and underbed space for storing suitcases. Cabins also feature great lighting, which employs dimmer switches and bedside controls. Bathrooms have heated floors, a surprising and wonderful detail, especially in the middle of the night. Africa’s Chobe River supports a diversity and concentration of wildlife unparalleled anywhere else on the continent.

For slightly larger accommodations, river cruisers should look to AmaMagna, as its double-width design allows for roomier accommodations. Its two top balcony categories offer a generous 474 and 710 square feet of space, similar to the square footage of suites on many ocean ships. Fixed window cabins on the lowest deck are 160 square feet, French balcony cabins are 155 to 170 square feet, twin balcony cabins (with both a French balcony and step-out veranda) are 210 to 235 square feet, and suites are 300 to 350 square feet. The company's two Douro River ships, AmaDouro and AmaVida, feature similarly sized cabins and suites.

Six Ama ships -- AmaViola, AmaStella, AmaKristina, AmaLea , AmaMora and AmaMagna -- also include several cabins that can accommodate three people (with a king-sized bed along with a chair that converts into a twin bed). These six ships also feature a number of connecting cabins, designed with families in mind. Viking and Ama both include enrichment programs during their sailings, and the offerings are comparable. They're designed to provide more insight into the ports and destinations the ships visit. The lines might bring onboard local singers, dancers and musicians during visits to Vienna, for example, or teach passengers how to make local dishes. Talks, too, focus on history of the region, and might include scenic cruising lectures, where the speaker points out highlights as the boat sails.

Sports Activities and SportSquare Carnival Cruise Line

carnival cruise activities

The best spot to get a dose of sun (or an appropriate amount of shade) is the Serenity Deck a beautifully relaxing spot for adults only (the minimum age to relax here is 21). Located on the very top deck -- Deck the space is gorgeously appointed, with sun beds, lounge chairs, hammocks and clamshells. You'll find faux palm trees and bright yellow umbrellas, along with some of the best views from the ship. It's away from the action of the Beach Pool area, so it really is quiet and far less busy.

The second quarter involves pool deck games where passengers have to dress up in football gear to complete team races. There's also a hot tub at Loft 19 on Deck 19, which charges a fee for access. Go one deck farther, and you can choose between the Havana Bar, which serves Latin-themed cocktails, and the Heroes Tribute Lounge, which has a special menu of drinks dedicated to military members. Back inside, Deck 6's Piano Bar is where passengers can order a tipple while an onboard pianist tickles the ivories. Make your way up a deck, and you'll find the Limelight Lounge, which serves as a secondary performance space and trivia outpost.

Tweens and Teens on Carnival Horizon

After 300 plus cruises, I can attest that the wifi on board Carnival Celebration is by far the best I’ve ever experienced on any ship and that even includes Princess’ Medallion Class. I also found that the single device rule was actually quite easy to negotiate, with a simple click or two to disable one device and activate another. With two to nine-day cruises from Tampa to the Caribbean and the Bahamas, Carnival Paradise literally takes cruisers to paradise islands. The ship brims with fun amenities like the WaterWorks splash zone and the relaxing Cloud 9 Spa.

Junior Suite (Obstructed View)

Smoking (including electronic cigarettes) is allowed but only in designated outdoor areas on Deck 8 mid-ship on the starboard side. Smoking is also allowed on the starboard side of the casino, but it's for cigarettes only. All types of smoking are forbidden in cabins and on cabin balconies.

Carnival Jubilee restaurants and bars

On Carnival Magic, Deluxe Ocean View staterooms are a great choice for families who want to let the sun shine in as they sail. Rooms in this category feature great views, a full bathroom — plus a separate washroom — and while stateroom configurations vary, certain Deluxe Ocean View rooms have space to sleep up to five cruisers. Here's your chance to dip a toe into onboard entertainment, activities, bars and more… so that when you cruise, you're ready to dive headfirst into the fun. During the evenings, the official dress code is pretty laid-back. Most nights are designated "cruise casual," which means just that — khakis or jeans, polo shirts, sundresses and the like. Super casual items such as cutoff jeans, men's sleeveless shirts, T-shirts and gym shorts are supposedly not permitted, but I saw plenty of them in the dining rooms during dinnertime on Carnival Jubilee.

Cloud 9 Spa Ocean View (Walkway View)

However, the service was generally excellent, with an exceedingly friendly crew. When Carnival Cruise Line's Carnival Jubilee debuted in December 2023, it became the third ship in the line's Excel Class, closely mimicking sister ships Mardi Gras and Carnival Celebration. Although there are more similarities than differences among the three, Carnival has still found a way to make Carnival Jubilee innovative and fun by tweaking a few of the offerings. The fitness center carries a range of cardiovascular equipment, such as treadmills, ellipticals, rowing machines and stationary bikes.

The colorful, creative space features an ocean motif, and programming focuses on things like active play, arts and crafts, music, and science and discovery -- many of which are inspired by the ocean. Furniture in Camp Ocean is properly kid-sized, and the room features beanbags, tumble mats and brightly colored blankets. The space also includes televisions for movies and video games, plenty of toys, slides and games. There's also a creative corner, with tables and hand-washing stations, for arts and crafts.

Kids Clubs on Carnival Celebration: Camp Ocean

If you’re into eating healthy and staying fit, you’ll have no problem keeping up your healthy lifestyle on the ship. Get in a good workout at the fitness center, where you’ll also have the opportunity to join in on an assortment of fun and energetic fitness classes. There are also a number of other bars that can be found onboard, including a tequila bar, a pour your own beer station, piano bar, karaoke bar and specialty cocktail bars.

FUN ON DECK

Lunches aren't provided on sea days, but on shore days, kids can enjoy lunch in the Lido Marketplace, while parents are ashore. Horizon's main dining rooms offer kids menus as part of a dinner-time coloring book, with fun distraction features like word finds and mazes. The spa also features a good-sized Thermal Suite, featuring steam rooms (including aroma and hammam), dry heat chambers, experience showers and a large whirlpool. The only thing that's missing is a thalassotherapy pool, which would be a nice touch in the space. There also are nine heated ceramic lounge chairs, which were well-used on our cruise.

Although it's often loud, busy and difficult to navigate, especially on sea days, it's a prime place to sit and people-watch. I found myself gravitating there repeatedly to enjoy coffee or a snack from the nearby JavaBlue Cafe while watching the cast from that night's show rehearse at Center Stage — something you can't usually do on other ships. Parents must sign in and out kids younger than 9 years old, but they can elect to give kids 9 and older the ability to sign themselves out. Camp Ocean provides hosted kids-only dinners each night (except the first night) in the Lido Marketplace. Menus are kid-friendly, with options like pizza, fish sticks and hamburgers.

Although the first half felt a bit shaky and slightly boring to me, the second half redeemed it all, featuring a parade of dancers and aerialists dressed in flamboyant costumes synonymous with Rio de Janeiro's Carnival. If you're interested in spending time outdoors working on your tan by the pool, you can do so at one of five onboard pools. I also wasn't impressed with how long it took a bartender to ask for my order, especially since it wasn't particularly crowded.
